A federal court in Mexico has ruled that Sandra Avila Beltran, also known as the “Queen of the Pacific,” cannot be extradited to the United States on drug trafficking charges, a decision that comes as a major victory to one of the most well known figures of Mexico’s criminal underworld.

According to El Universal, the Mexico City-based First Circuit Court has ruled that Ms. Avila’s extradition, which had been authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is unlawful because it involves the same charges (drug trafficking) that she faces in Mexico. Under international law, it is customary for a person to be extradited to another country only if they face a different, and typically more serious, set of criminal charges.

Avila first gained attention from the media in September 2007 when she and her love interest, convicted Colombian drug trafficker Juan Diego Espinosa Ramírez, alias “El Tigre,” were arrested by Mexican authorities for allegedly conspiring to smuggle nine tons of cocaine northward via a port in Colima in 2001.

Since then, Mexican and American media outlets have been fascinated by her, with Newsweek magazine calling her Mexico’s “Underworld Queenpin” and ABC news referring to her as Mexico’s “Glamorous Gangster.” As InSight Crime has noted, Avila raises interesting questions about gender roles in Mexico’s drug trade. Her flashy outfits and posh tastes are a rare sight in the world of drug trafficking, which is more often marked by images of scruffy, dangerous-looking men.

Even before earning the title “Queen of the Pacific” by becoming a key link between the Sinaloa Cartel and Colombia’s Norte del Valle Cartel, Avila’s life seemed destined to revolve around criminal activities. She was born into a family closely associated with drug trafficking, and her uncle was Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo, alias “the Godfather,” who was one of Mexico’s first major drug traffickers.

Avila used romantic relationships to advantage
Over the years, she ascended the country’s criminal hierarchy by using romantic relationships to her advantage. Both of her ex-husbands were notoriously corrupt police chiefs, and both were murdered in drug-related killings. Prior to her current relationship with Espinosa Ramirez, Avila was romantically linked with Ismael Zambada García, alias “El Mayo,” a major figure in the Sinaloa Cartel.

To this day she enjoys significant influence because of her criminal ties, a fact that was most recently evidenced in January, when a prison doctor gave her a facial Botox injection while in prison, a luxury procedure that is not authorized for Mexican inmates. The treatment sparked something of a scandal in Mexico’s justice system, resulting in the dismissal of the prison’s director and hospital chief.

Still, Avila’s current level of involvement in criminal activities is not clear. For her part, she claims that her only source of income comes from “selling clothes and renting houses,” a claim that, considering her background, is highly suspect to say the least. In December, a Mexican judge absolved her of the 2001 drug trafficking charges, saying that the prosecution failed to “establish the circumstances of time, manner, place, and occasion” in which the crimes were committed. Despite the acquittal, federal attorneys have vowed to appeal the ruling. Additionally, in March Avila was charged with laundering money, and a court has ordered that she remain in detention while awaiting a trial.

The most recent decision effectively blocks Avila from being extradited, unless US prosecutors are able to submit new, extraditable charges in their case against her. This surely irks US drug officials, who are already frustrated by delays in the prosecution of Edgar Valdez Villarreal, alias “La Barbie,” which have postponed the timeline for his extradition.

I’ve been unable to share my days with Tumblr recently, but today I’ve taken a break from the things that have been occupying so much of my time. Watch The Throne was released today. It has already been hailed as an all-time classic. This album has inspired me to push. I have a lot of things that I am fully aware are about to be heaped onto my plate all at once, but I have a level of confidence and belief about myself that i have never known. I am honestly in the most uncertain time of my life so far, yet I am approaching the situation with a strong sense of positive arrogance that I know I will defeat tis challenge. It’s like I can see a room full of riches behind a thick glass window, and instead of fretting about the thickness of the window, I just know that the window is going to open for me. But now I understand what this arrogance and belief is here for, not o carry me but rather for me to believe that I can do it myself. The arrogance has become a part of Terrance for him to use at his disposal. Living life today inspired me to make better use of old talents and dominate with the new ones.

The challenge of accepting your current situation as reality and being prepared for a better future go hand in hand. My current situation is that I have a crappy job, live with my parents, and I don’t have a girlfriend…yet lol. I can accept that as a current reality as long as I maintain the confidence ofknowing I am worthy of, capable and prepared to live a better life. I want a life better tailored to my personality, my beliefs, my pleasures and my social status. Not that I am an elitist or pompous prick, but I am aware that in comparison to my family I am more in touch with modern society and I am unique in a way that my family does not understand. I am not meant to be a construction worker, but now I know i have the strength to do it. I am not a bum, but if I don’t accomplish all of the things I am capable of I will qualify as one. I do not want to be the typical Lee. And only a few people know what that means. I have to succeed. I remind myself of my desires to motivate my present. Living life showed me today revealed the difference between desire and will.

I have not read the book for myself so I don’t have a personal review, but I find the read to be intriguing and engaging based on its reviews.

FOOTBALL RETURNS!!!! Ok, now that I have expressed my joyful relief about the lockout ending I can reflect on the day in a more personal manner. I found myself asking myself this question often, “Do people actually lose themselves or are they finding that who they were is no longer how they can happily exist. I looked back on my days in a childhood situation that wasn’t ideal, my academic career, friends, relationships, religion and even fashion(Yes, it means that much to me). I laughed, I became thankful, I became motivated, I found more drive, but most of all I found myself having no regrets. I realized all of these things that once were heavy burdens on me had been lifted. I would not dare revisit some of my past while other memories are cherished, but all of it makes up my life. Hard, trying, lonely, challenging and cold I have overcome and I am proud that I made it. However, in earnest my drive and hunger have just now begun to consume me. I lost sight of the things that would have kept me where I was, but the spirit they gave me has become very ambitious and prideful. So living life today I have discovered a new more determined Terrance and I have finally found the part of me that uses past steps as a staircase to a higher place now. I have a few floors to see before Heaven.

Tired from yesterday’s 13 hour shift, I dragged myself out of bed and through the lackluster routine of preparing to leave for work. The drive presented no storylines and the school smelled like wet Tootsie Rolls and mansweat at 7:02 AM. Searching for any sort of inspiration to carry me through a long day of stuff, I relied upon Pandora to stimulate my sense of labor. The Jay-Z,Nas,UGK and Kanye tandem came to the rescue. Jamming through the aisles of Adelle Turner, I recieved strange looks from men who have no clue how to enjoy themselves in any setting. This Diddy boppin fool enjoyed the sounds of music in a major way today. Living life today showed me that awareness of yourself can carry you through any siutation. It makes you confident, gives you freedom and enhances your output. Be aware of you, be aware of your setting and be the best you everywhere. God only made 1
